Genetic Testing - Can
This Be A Life Saver?
At some point in our
lives I'm sure many of us have thought about having more control over
our health risks. We may have wondered if it were possible to know
ahead of time what health challenges might be brewing in our bodies,
what impact that would have on our lives.
While some of us would rather go by the saying, "what you don't know
won't kill you", I think the majority of us would want to know. What
would you give to get some hint as to whether or not you were at risk
for the "Fatal Five" diseases including Heart Disease, Cancer, Stroke,
Lung Disease and Diabetes?
Genetic testing might sound like a concept straight out of a science
fiction novel; however, this chance to peak into the future of your
health is an opportunity that many people are grasping today. This is
especially critical for people with a family history of certain medical
conditions.
What would you give to get some hint as to whether or not you were at
risk for the "Fatal Five" diseases including Heart Disease, Cancer,
Stroke, Lung Disease and Diabetes?
By examining a person's DNA, which can be taken from the mouth with
just a small swab or scraping device, it is now possible to predict the
probability that a person will develop certain diseases. It will soon
be possible to predict every forthcoming disease or condition not
caused by external factors.
The ability to be able to make future plans centered around your
awareness of your future health risks, is probably the most powerful
feeling that a human being could ever have.
Now is this to say that we can avoid them totally? Maybe not, but if we
know about these diseases "in time" we can surely change our
lifestyles, especially through our diet and exercise -- and give our
bodies a fighting chance against these killing monsters.
The kind of technology that can provide us with this information is
just now coming to the fore and is being embraced by people all over.
The medical and scientific community are saying that genetic testing
can be a life saver, if done early.
10 years ago when I was diagnosed with early signs of one of these
diseases I went through all the stages of alarm, shock and denial and
everything else in between. I was a young man in my prime, never had a
health challenge of any significance. I thought I was living a healthy
lifestyle, so how could this happen!
Well, after the dust settled, I started to do some research and found
out that I might have inherited this disease from some of my Dad's
genes. There was some history of that dreaded disease in my family.
Fortunately for me, this was discovered early, so I could now change my
whole perspective and start paying close attention to this new
challenge. I no longer took life for granted, instead, I decided to do
whatever it takes to preserve my health as best as I can.
When we are faced with choices we have some control over our lives,
unlike some people who find out that they have one of these deadly
disease when it's too late.
Not all of us are fortunate enough to catch these disease in the early
stages -- and of course, the later we catch it is the less of a
fighting chance we have. Diseases, including the fatal five takes many
years, sometimes decades to manifest themselves -- and early detection
is the only chance we have to defeat them.
There are 4 stages to these diseases:
1. The Disease Begins -- sometimes in your teens...
2. The Disease Can Be Diagnosed -- if specific tests are done...
3. The Effects Of The Disease Can Be Felt -- it's kinda getting
late...
4. The End Stage Of The Disease -- Done! Kaput! RIP!
*People with a family history of certain medical conditions can plan
for their future by understanding their health risks!*
While genetic testing is still in it's infancy, scientists and members
of the medical fraternity have been looking forward to this day for a
long time. People who are proactive about their health are scrambling
to come to grips with the new found realization of what this all means.
There have been cases where some people have lived in fear of
developing one of these disease all their life because some family
member died from it. Stress from that alone can lead to an early death
if you keep thinking about it; however, having a genetic test done can
be a life saver, as you will know for sure and be able to take the
necessary steps to defeat it.
As early detection is so critical there is no time like the present to
get tested, so that you will have some control over your future health.
Remember, our nutrition plays the most important role in our defense
mechanism to fight diseases and can result in whether or not we live a
full life or it gets shortened. The choice is yours.
