DNA And Genetics Primer
- What Do We Know About DNA & The Genetic Saga?
The make up of the
human body is the most fascinating of all creation. Many of us take
this for granted. We go through life resorting to our daily routines
without giving a thought to the multitude of complex functions that
occur continuously like clockwork in our bodies.
While
many of us might be aware of some of the apparent elements like
breathing, heart-beating, speaking or moving of the limbs at any given
time, how many of us really try to fathom the infinite wonder of all
this? Is it better to leave it all to the scientists and the health
professionals to keep us informed, or should we play a more active role
in understanding the make up and functions of our unique bodies?
Our
bodies are made up of many different organs and at the foundation of
all this are the millions of cells that contribute to this. Within
every human cell there is a specific blueprint for that individual's
life. This is known as your DNA.
It
it said that if you were to take a strand of DNA and measure it from
one end to the next it would measure about 6 feet. This DNA is broken
down into different parts namely, chromosomes, genes and nucleotides.
There
are 23 pairs of chromosomes in each cells. These chromosomes contain
all of our genetic information. Inside these chromosomes are genes.
These are simply a sequence of DNA that corresponds to a particular
inheritable trait, that contribute to our individuality.
We
inherit one gene from each parent for each individual trait. Genes are
responsible for different physical features like hair color, height
etc. The main job of these genes is to tell our bodies how to build
proteins. Proteins play a critical role in our bodily functions and
just goes to show the important role that genes play in our overall
makeup.
The
building block of our DNA starts with nucleotides which is the smallest
unit in this whole DNA blueprint.
Now
research has shown that based strictly on DNA humans are very much
alike. Although we have many apparent differences, the DNA between any
two persons is 99.1% identical. However, that 0.9% difference in our
DNA makeup is very important as it accounts for all of our varied
genetic differences.
Understanding
the basic components of our bodies, their make up and functions, not
only equip us with good information for our social gatherings, but it
also assist us in understanding the importance of getting the right
diet and nutrition at the cellular level.
The
DNA and Genetics era is here and while there is a lot of information
out there, it's obvious that not many people know about what's going
on. A simple genetics test can provide vital information that can
probably save your life and should be considered.
Scientists
now have the ability to identify small variations in our genetic code
that can lead to diminished health and well-being. By identifying which
of these variations you have, it is now possible to design a targeted
nutritional supplement program specifically for your genotype.
This
is just a brief primer that goes to show a small part of the enormous
complexities that goes into making up our bodies. It also reflects the
commonalities that exist between individuals and the variations in our
genes which can lead to health challenges later on. This is why it is
so important to have a DNA assessment done sooner than later.
