Like many of you I've had my share of pushy sales people calling on the phone daily.
As soon as you answer the phone they just start rattling off their sales pitch, most times reading from a script, sometimes not even aware if you're still on the line.
Wow! You wonder if they have time to breathe through all of that.
You know I've always wondered why some companies continue to do this service knowing that most times it is a waste of time.
The most successful sales people have dialog with their prospect. It is important to hear what the needs of the prospect is before you indulge into the benefits of your service and showing why it will serve their best interest.
Selling your services without sounding pushy is what differentiates the top sales people, from the ones who have the phone hung up in their ears more times than they care to remember.
While there are many reasons why some people sound pushy even when they do not mean to, there are certain skills and techniques that can be learnt and applied to overcome this problem, which of course will enable you to become a source of greater value to your company.
Here are eight simple techniques that will help you to be more successful in selling your services without sounding too pushy:
1. ***Believe in yourself and the product/service you are selling. People can sense whether or not you are coming across as having their interest at heart. By having confidence in your product it will reflect in your conversation.
2. ***Get a feel for the product or service you are selling. Instead of looking at just selling to make a quick buck, try to understand why it is important for your prospect to purchase what you're selling.
3. ***Learn as much as you can about the product or service. This will boost your confidence level. Low self-esteem is a killer factor in sales and one of the ways to overcome this is to know your product.
4. ***Most companies provide a script for tele-marketers or the people who man the phones. To avoid coming across as just another telemarketer, memorize your script and interject your personality into it.
5. ***Before making your calls get yourself into a positive frame of mind.
Relax, take a couple of deep breaths. Close your eyes for a minute and visualize a friendly person on the other line - just waiting for your call. - SMILE -
6. ***Before making your sales pitch you should listen to the needs of your prospect.
Find a need or needs that your offer will address and focus in on that need. Many times if we would just listen to our prospect they will tell us exactly why they need our product.
7. ***Appeal to the emotions of your prospect. This is very important.
People do most things through emotions and appealing to your prospect's emotions will soften their resistance to your offer. This can be by portraying a sense of caring and understanding of their situation.
This does not mean you should get into a pity party with them; however, by displaying that you are a caring person your prospect will warm up to you more. Remember, if you come across as a friendly person you will make more sales.
8. ***Project a sense of urgency in your presentation without sounding pushy.
This can be achieved by highlighting the need for your prospect to make their purchase fast in order for them to start reaping the benefits of what it offers. This can be a tricky part to master.
This is where some of the top sales people kinda "take it away" from the prospect while continuing to focus on the needs. Allowing your prospect to make the buying decision without you pushing it will give them a good feeling.
Good phone skills is very important in making sales and not everyone is comfortable with it. Some people just do it to make a fast buck, but never put their heart into it.
Remember that you're dealing with people and to succeed in this industry, you have to learn and apply good people skills in order to make good money.
