There is nothing wrong in getting the family involved in your business and if you think hard enough you can always find little things that need done. Depending on their age, there are some business tasks that even your children can help with.
Additionally, by allowing them to help for just compensation will help them to develop good work habits and develop a sense of responsibility.
While some of the tasks may seem menial to many children, such as taking out the trash and sweeping the office, they will learn valuable lessons for later on in life,
if they can view every employee as valuable to the organization regardless of their job function.
Have papers and records to shred? Let them run them through as a way of teaching them about confidentiality in the business world.
As they grow older they can take a more active and possibly a more creative role in the business. Remember, your kids are going to see things from a different perspective other than simply making money.
Assigning certain jobs such as making sure the paper tray in the printer and fax machine are always full and ready to go and that office supplies are always in stock. Teach them how to order what they need to keep the cabinet fully stocked and how often orders have to be placed to prevent running out.
There are laws, some differ by state, concerning the use of child labor even though they are your children, when they are working for you they deserve the same type of respect you would give to any employee.
Making them do all the dirty jobs simply because they are your children is not acceptable in any circumstance. It may make them grow up resenting the dirty work.
You will have to show them that the jobs they do is important to running the business and that you won't ask anyone to do some that you would be unwilling to do yourself.
Close monitoring may be required if you allow them to answer your business phone and when having them write letters on behalf of your business, make sure you look them over before sending them out.
Over time, a sense of confidence in their abilities will make trusting them easier, as well as their confidence will be bolstered knowing their parents trust them to help out in their business.
Having your children help out in your business not only free up some of your time, but also helps them learn responsibility as an employee. How you treat them as an employee will help them realize the importance of treating those they may supervise as adults with the respect they deserve. The lessons they learn can prove invaluable for their future.
