Opening your own business working from home is a big commitment, not only to you and potential customers, but also to your family. When you work for someone else a steady paycheck helps keep the bills paid, food on the table and provides for little comforts. You count on your boss to have enough business to stay open and provide you with an income. When you have your own business, there is no one to count on except yourself.
When working for someone else there are also other people to take care of a variety of business-related responsibilities. Issuing paychecks, advertising, ordering supplies and keeping vendors paid are all handled by others while you simply do the work for which you are paid. When you have your own home business, there is no one else, unless you have the money to hire help. Typically, in the first stages of a business, the owner handles everything.
With all the additional responsibilities, the thought that you will have all the time in the world open to do as you please is not entirely accurate. There will be certain number of hours required to run the business. With you as the owner, you may be able to determine which hours you work, but you will have to work. Even running in internet business there will be daily tasks that need to be completed. Evaluating your marketing efforts to find out what is working and what needs to be changed may not take a lot of time, but it will have to be consistent if you hope to grow the business.
When you worked for someone else, it was easy enough to pick up the phone in the morning and report off if you didn't feel like getting out of bed. When you run your own business, there is no one to call and no one else who is going to cover your job while you lounge around all day watching television or go fishing. You not only commit to your family that you will provide for them, but you commit to yourself that you have created something that needs daily attention in order to survive.
Working from home also presents a lot of distractions that you will have to commit to work through or around. Family members wanting to talk or friends and relatives stopping by unannounced can be distractive enough.
Other distractions that can rob you of precious time include web surfing or playing computer games when you're supposed to be working. You will have to commit to the philosophy that anything you do that does not directly relate to the operation of your business and has the potential to generate income is a waste of your time.
